Monaco's 2-0 win over Lyon on Sunday evening has secured them the second place in Ligue 1 for the 2021/22 season, with direct Champions League qualification already assured.

The match at the Stade Louis-II saw Monaco dominate possession and create numerous opportunities, but it was their clinical finishing that ultimately sealed the victory. A first-half goal from Raul Alcaraz and a late strike from Adama Traore put Monaco into the lead, before Lyon pulled one back through a penalty in the closing stages.

With two games remaining in the campaign, Monaco now have a commanding lead over third-placed Nice, who are three points behind them in fourth position. The Blues will be hoping to maintain their momentum as they look to secure a top-four finish and potentially even qualify for Europe's premier club competition next term.

Meanwhile, Lyon's hopes of securing Champions League football were dealt a blow as they fell to their second defeat of the season against a resolute Monaco side. Despite creating several chances themselves, the visitors struggled to find the net, with their only effort coming from a late penalty.

Despite the loss, Lyon remain in the hunt for a top-four finish and a Europa League place, but will need to improve if they are to compete with Monaco and Nice for European spots. As for Monaco, they can now focus on preparing for the final few matches of the season, while also looking ahead to next year's campaign.
